Flavor Profile

The most famous Grenache growing vineyards in the world are in quite warm to hot growing areas such as Southern Rhone, Priorat, or even Paso Robles. The wines are usually big, ripe, almost syrupy ... Grenache can take it and excel in those conditions. Cool climate Grenache is very different, at least when harvested at reasonable sugar levels. This wine is elegant, layered, with a purity of fruit, and brilliant cherry red clarity. Light red plum and hibiscus aromas meet with sweet herbs and cinnamon spice on the nose. In structure it's more like Pinot Noir than it is to Chateauneuf du Pape! Serve slightly cool with foods that are appropriate for Pinot Noir.

To have the Demeter Certified Biodynamic emblem on the label, winemaking techniques must also be approved, which we did. To maximize and balance fruit extraction, we used 40% whole clusters in an open top fermenter, stomping on the whole clusters, before de-stemming the rest. Since this wine is biodynamic, native yeasts were allowed to do their thing and nothing was added except a small amount of SO2. Grenache, being an oxidative varietal, is handled differently than Syrah. The grapes are pressed shortly before they get to dryness while there's still plenty of CO2 to protect it. Then it goes direct from the press to neutral barrels, where it's aged on the lees for 18 months. At that point, I make a barrel selection and we rack it for the first time using gravity instead of a pump. This is when the Syrah (also from SLV) is added. This wine is approachable now, or age over the next 5-8 years.

About Edna Valley

The wine is 91 % Grenache and 9% Syrah from Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard (SLV) in the Edna Valley AVA. We planted this vineyard in 2005, using biodynamic farming methods, and in 2009 it was Demeter Certified Biodynamic. There are four different clones or selections of Grenache planted at SLV, and for our single vineyard bottling we used a clone selection that came from the Alban Vineyard, also in the Edna Valley.
