2014 Qupe Sawyer Lindquist Vyd Viognier
This wine is 100% Viognier from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the cool Edna Valley region of southern San Luis Obispo County. This one acre vineyard block was planted to Syrah in 2005, then grafted to the Ibarra-Young clone of Viognier in 2011. The first crop was this 2012!
The grapes were whole cluster pressed, the juice chilled overnight, and then transferred to neutral French oak barrels for fermentation.
This wine is Demeter Certified Biodynamic, so was fermented with native yeasts. Aging was 6 months in the neutral barrels and the wine went through complete malo.
The Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard turns out to be a perfect place to grow Viognier. This north by northwest hillside block doesn’t get as much direct sun, capturing more acidity and more of the mineral components of Viognier. This still has the classic floral and peach/apricot aromatics that Viognier is known for. In the mouth it is rich and creamy but with nice, fresh acidity.
I like to drink Viognier young, within the first three years of the vintage. I have no doubt that this wine will age well, but why wait!
