2013 Qupe "Los Olivos Cuvee"
61% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache
This wine is 61% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre and 15% Grenache. The Syrah and Mourvedre come from the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in the Los Olivos District (Santa Barbara County’s newest AVA), and the Grenache comes from the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley. The grapes at Ibarra-Young are organically farmed, and the grapes at Sawyer Lindquist are biodynamically farmed. This is a classic Southern Rhône style blend but from cool climate vineyard sites. It is so much more elegant in style. And 15 months age in neutral French oak barrels ensured harmony.
This is our 26th consecutive bottling of this special wine - Qupé was the first to create a “GSM” blend in Santa Barbara County! These Rhône varietals are great on their own but make an intriguing statement as a blend. The nose is well integrated with cherry and dark chocolate aromas joined by berry, cola, earth flavors on the palate. It's approachable, supple yet has depth.
This wine is always one of my favorite wines we produce. Rich without being heavy, fruity without being cloying, and structured without being tannic. Though it's tempting to drink it now, put some away for 10-15 years if you can.
