Under the direction of veteran winemaker Bob Lindquist, Qupé was one of the first to advocate American-made Syrah and other Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Roussanne, and Marsanne. Bob has been a leader in the movement producing world class editions since the early 1980s and continues his quest with the same zeal he started with. His fastidious, open minded nature ensures Qupé wines are the ultimate expression of that varietal from that location year after year.
This is our 26th consecutive bottling of this special wine - Qupé was the first to create a “GSM” blend in Santa Barbara County! The nose is well integrated with cherry and dark chocolate aromas joined by berry, cola, earth flavors on the palate. It's approachable, supple yet has depth. Rich without being heavy, fruity without being cloying, and structured without being tannic.
Another amazing vintage of this wine. Rich, complex, balanced. As always, this wine is made using very traditional, time tested wine making techniques…whole cluster pressed, complete barrel fermentation with 100% malo, and aging on the lees for the first year in mostly new, Francois Freres oak barrels, then bottled after 18 months total barrel time.
This is a more forward expression of Syrah showing more of the red fruit character accented by sandalwood and cardamom. With softer acidity than our cooler climate Syrah’s, I recommend drinking this wine a little younger, say 5-8 years after the vintage.
This is a savory, spicy, meaty Syrah with a noticeable edginess from the whole clusters. It was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new, This is a much more complex wine than past vintages. Think about putting this away for years to come. You will be rewarded. Score: 91 points/Year's Best Syrah - Wine & Spirits Magazine.
The aromas are heady and spicy, with a black pepper character normally associated with Syrah. It has that classic wild cherry aroma as well.
What is most striking is the depth and complexity already achieved from young vines. The wine has tremendous pepper spice with deep, savory fruit and balanced alcohol. It shows great in its youth, but please be patient and reward yourself by putting some bottles in the cellar for 5-8 years. Score: 92 points - Vinous.
Gorgeous. Layered, perfumed and silky. Balanced with enticing aromas and flavors of blackberry, wild cherry and smoky, peppery spices. Scored 91 points - Vinous.
This is quite an exotic bottling of Qupé Marsanne! Richer, bigger and more complex than the Santa Barbara County Marsanne. It still has that classic peach pit, lanolin and mineral character, with lovely floral aspects from a small addition of Viognier.
