Qupé is blessed with access to many of the Central Coasts greatest vineyards. In this section you can find information on all of the vineyards, our farming practices, and a the people who work this beautiful land. For those of you unfamiliar with the Central Coast, our neck of the woods starts around Santa Barbara (some argue as far south as Ojai but we couldn’t find a map that had Ojai on it…sorry Ojai) and stretches north as far as Monterey depending on who you ask. The strict reading of the American Viticulture Areas ruling has it going as far North as South Bay San Francisco, but we feel that’s a bit of a stretch. For our farming purposes we focus on what’s close to home, the Santa Maria Valley. Made up of 80,000 acres Santa Maria Valley is the 2nd largest AVA within the Central Coast AVA, followed shortly thereafter by the Santa Ynez Valley with 76,800 acres and then Paso Robles with roughly 67,000 acres *Disclaimer: the ruling on these areas is constantly changing. Areas grow and change for a variety of reasons not the least of which is politics. If you are interested please check out wineinstitute.org list of AVA’s for more information.* In addition these three AVA’s encompass many smaller area’s like Edna Valley a
nd Santa Ynez Valley. This is where we source much of our fruit and are fortunate to have good relationships with many growers in these regions who use Bio-dynamic farming methods in there own vineyards. This is the method we employ in our Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard. We are guided in our efforts by Phillipe Armenier a consultant who works up and down the California working for such prestigious wineries as L’Aventure in Paso Robles, Grgich Hills Estate in Napa as well as many of the wineries we source fruit from. His attention to detail and love of the land has help us get to the point were our soils are rich and our vines are now providing us with beautiful fruit that speaks to the place it was grown; what the wine geeks call terroir.
This concept of terroir is what drives our wines, and why we focus so much attention on the vineyards our fruit comes from. Each vineyard has a unique statement, that is expressed differently each vintage. Our three primary Vineyards are Sawyer Lindquist, Bien Nacido, and Ibarra-Young, but as we mentioned, we work with many amazing growers year after year from all over the valley, all making great fruit. Please check out our drop down pages for more information on the specific vineyards and a bit about there history. Cheers!
